Sea Turtle Conservation in Costa Rica, Join Our Monitoring Expedition

Costa Rica is one of the most important countries in the world for sea turtle conservation.

From remote nesting beaches to the biodiverse Pacific waters of the Gulf of Papagayo, several sea turtle species depend on these ecosystems for feeding, migration, and reproduction.

Protecting these vulnerable animals requires more than awareness. It requires research, monitoring, and active conservation efforts.

Hands on marine science in costa rica with sea turtles

At Rich Coast Diving, our 6-Day Sea Turtle Monitoring Expedition allows divers to work alongside marine biologists while contributing directly to sea turtle conservation initiatives in Costa Rica.

This is more than a dive trip. It is a hands-on marine conservation expedition combining citizen science, ecological education, and real-world field research.

Why Sea Turtle Conservation Matters

Sea turtles play a critical role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems.

As key indicator species, their health reflects the condition of coral reefs, seagrass beds, and coastal ecosystems. Unfortunately, sea turtles worldwide face increasing threats from:

  • Illegal fishing

  • Habitat destruction

  • Plastic pollution

  • Climate change

  • Coastal development

Several sea turtle species found in Costa Rica are considered threatened or endangered, making long-term monitoring and conservation efforts essential.

By participating in structured monitoring programs, divers can actively support research initiatives that help scientists better understand and protect these species.

A Unique Marine Conservation Expedition in Costa Rica

Our Sea Turtle Monitoring Expedition combines six days of diving, field research, ecological education, and conservation-focused citizen science.

Led in collaboration with marine biologists Randall Arauz and/or Daniel Arauz, the expedition allows participants to assist with non-invasive sea turtle monitoring while exploring Costa Rica’s incredible Pacific marine biodiversity.

Throughout the expedition, participants complete:

  • 6 days of 2-tank research dives

  • Sea turtle monitoring field dives

  • Data collection and photo-identification projects

  • SSI Sea Turtle Ecology Specialty certification

  • Conservation seminars with marine biologists

  • A visit to a protected nesting beach and turtle sanctuary

The expedition blends marine science with meaningful underwater experiences in one of Costa Rica’s richest marine ecosystems.

Citizen Science in Action

One of the most unique aspects of this expedition is the opportunity to participate in real marine conservation fieldwork.

During survey dives, participants assist marine biologists with:

  • Sea turtle spotting and identification

  • Photo-ID documentation

  • Population monitoring

  • Data collection

  • Behavioral observations

The expedition specifically supports ongoing monitoring efforts focused on hawksbill sea turtles, one of the most critically endangered sea turtle species in the world.

Participants may also assist during onboard data collection activities, including:

  • Measuring and weighing turtles

  • Photo-identification projects

  • Tissue sampling support

  • Tagging procedures conducted by licensed biologists

Only trained marine biologists handle the turtles directly, ensuring all research follows ethical and non-invasive scientific protocols. This is citizen science with real conservation impact.

Dive the Biodiverse Waters of Costa Rica

The Pacific waters surrounding Playas del Coco and the Gulf of Papagayo offer some of the best marine biodiversity in Central America.

During the expedition, divers may encounter:

  • Sea turtles

  • White tip reef sharks

  • Eagle rays

  • Mobulas

  • Moray eels

  • Octopus

  • Tropical reef fish

  • Macro marine life

Seasonally, participants may also have the opportunity to visit the famous Catalinas Islands, known for giant manta ray encounters.

The combination of biodiversity and conservation fieldwork creates an unforgettable marine conservation diving experience.

Visit a Protected Sea Turtle Nesting Beach

One of the most memorable experiences of the expedition is the evening visit to a protected sea turtle sanctuary and nesting beach in Costa Rica’s North Pacific region.

After an educational presentation about sea turtle biology and conservation challenges, participants head to the nesting beach after sunset using strict eco-guidelines and red lights to minimize disturbance.

Depending on conditions and timing, participants may respectfully observe a female sea turtle laying eggs in her natural habitat.

This experience directly supports ongoing conservation and monitoring efforts for endangered sea turtle populations in Costa Rica.

Learn From Costa Rica’s Leading Marine Conservationists

A major highlight of the expedition is the opportunity to learn directly from marine conservation leaders Randall Arauz and Daniel Arauz.

Their seminars provide firsthand insight into:

  • Sea turtle conservation challenges

  • Marine ecosystem protection

  • Research methods

  • Policy and enforcement realities

  • Conservation success stories in Costa Rica

Participants also review the week’s findings and connect their own contributions to broader marine conservation efforts happening throughout the country.

This combination of fieldwork, education, and mentorship makes the expedition uniquely impactful.
