Planning a scuba diving holiday? If you are going to be making multiple dives during your trip, you may want to consider getting Nitrox certified before you travel.
The good news is that you don't necessarily need to wait until you arrive at your dive destination.
With the SSI Enriched Air Nitrox 32 certification, you can complete the course online from home and arrive at your destination already certified to dive Nitrox.
That means more time for diving and less time spent doing paperwork and training during your vacation.

Can You Get Nitrox Certified Online?
Yes.
The SSI Enriched Air Nitrox 32 program is available online for certified Open Water Divers.
You can complete the digital learning (3 chapters and final exam) from home, without attending a traditional classroom session.
Once you successfully complete the course, you receive your SSI Enriched Air Nitrox 32 certification.
This makes it particularly convenient if you are preparing for an upcoming dive holiday.

Why Get Nitrox Certified Before Your Holiday?
Imagine arriving at your destination and finding out that the liveaboards or dive center offers Nitrox, but you aren't certified.
You may have to spend part of your vacation completing the Nitrox course before you can use it.
Getting certified before you leave home solves that problem.
When you arrive, you can simply show your certification to the dive operator and, where Nitrox is available and appropriate for your dives, you're ready to use it.

This can be especially useful if you are planning:
A scuba diving holiday
A liveaboard trip
Multiple dives per day
A week or more of diving
A dive safari
A trip to Costa Rica, Mexico, the Caribbean, Egypt, Thailand, Indonesia or the Maldives

What Is Nitrox 32?
Nitrox is a breathing gas containing more oxygen and less nitrogen than regular air.
Normal atmospheric air contains approximately 21% oxygen.
Nitrox 32 (EAN32) contains 32% oxygen and 68% nitrogen.
Because there is less nitrogen in the breathing gas, Nitrox can reduce nitrogen exposure during an appropriate dive profile and can provide longer no-decompression limits at certain depths.
This is one reason Nitrox is so popular with divers who make repetitive dives during holidays and liveaboard trips.

Is Nitrox Good for Dive Holidays?
For many recreational divers, yes. A typical dive holiday often involves repetitive diving:
Morning Dive 1 → surface interval → morning dive 2 → lunch → afternoon dive → repeat the next day.
Nitrox can be particularly useful in this situation because it can reduce nitrogen exposure compared with breathing air for an equivalent dive profile.
However, Nitrox doesn't mean that you can simply stay underwater indefinitely.
Your actual dive limits still depend on factors such as:
Depth
Dive profile
Your dive computer
Gas supply
Repetitive dives
Surface intervals
Oxygen exposure limits
Nitrox is a tool that needs to be used correctly, not a reason to ignore normal dive planning.

Do I Need to Be an SSI Diver?
No. You don't have to be an SSI Open Water Diver to take the SSI Enriched Air Nitrox 32 course.
Certified divers from other recognized training agencies can also take the program, provided they are open water diver certified.
So if you are a:
PADI diver
SSI diver
NAUI diver
SDI diver
RAID diver
CMAS diver
BSAC diver
you can complete your SSI Nitrox certification online. This makes the course particularly convenient for international travelers who have trained with different diving organizations.

How Long Does the Online Nitrox Course Take?
The SSI Enriched Air Nitrox 32 online course can be completed relatively quickly.
For most divers, the digital learning can be completed in approximately one hour, depending on your pace and experience.
You can therefore complete the course well before your holiday instead of trying to fit another course into your travel schedule.
Our recommendation is simple:
Don't leave it until the day before you fly.
Give yourself enough time to complete the digital learning (3 chapters) , take the final exam, and have your certification ready before your trip.
