Curious about advancing your scuba diving skills in Costa Rica? Whether you're a beginner diver or already certified, SSI Specialty Courses are a great way to build confidence and explore exciting new areas like night diving, shark ecology, or underwater navigation.
At Rich Coast Diving, we often get questions about which specialties to choose, how long they take, or who can sign up. This FAQ guide answers the most common questions divers ask about SSI Specialty Courses in Costa Rica—so you can dive in fully prepared.

1. What is an SSI Specialty Course?
An SSI Specialty Course is a focused training program that helps divers improve specific skills (like buoyancy or deep diving) or learn more about marine life and safety (like shark ecology or first aid). Some involve diving, while others are knowledge-based and open to non-divers. Have a look at the more then 20 Specialty courses we offer here at Rich Coast Diving.
2. How long do SSI Specialty Courses take?
Most SSI specialties take 1 to 2 days. Non-diving courses such as Enriched Air Nitrox or Marine Ecology can be completed in a half-day, while diving-based specialties generally include 2–4 dives.
3. What are the prerequisites?
Diving specialties (e.g., Deep, Navigation, Night): require Open Water Diver certification.
Knowledge-based specialties (e.g., Shark Ecology, Marine Ecology, React Right): no diving certification is required—perfect for non-divers or aspiring professionals.
