Why We Do Things Differently at Rich Coast Diving

After more than 30 years in the diving industry, you learn a few things. You learn that ocean conditions can change quickly, that no two divers are the same, and that a great dive guide can turn an ordinary dive into an unforgettable experience.
You also learn that the smallest details, whether on a boat, in the classroom or at the dive shop, can make a surprisingly big difference to someone's experience.
Most importantly, we've learned that people don't remember a dive center simply because of the equipment they rented or the number of dives they completed. They remember how they felt while they were there.
That is one of the reasons we do things differently at Rich Coast Diving.
Celine Monfort and Niels Prinssen as owners of Rich Coast Diving have taken diving in Costa Rica to the next level.
We are not trying to be the biggest dive center, and we're not interested in putting as many people as possible on a boat or moving divers through courses as quickly as possible.
Our goal is to create great diving experiences, meaningful training and memories that people take home with them.
After thousands of guests and hundreds of five-star reviews, we are fortunate to have a pretty good idea of what that means.
It Starts With Personal Attention
One of the most common things guests mention in their reviews is something that might sound simple: they felt looked after.
First-time divers tell us that their instructor was patient. Experienced divers appreciate that their guide understood their experience level.
Families tell us that everyone felt comfortable, even when members of the family had very different levels of experience. People returning to diving after several years often tell us how reassuring it was to have an instructor who took the time to understand their concerns before getting into the water.
That doesn't happen by accident. We believe diving should be personal.
A nervous first-time diver needs something different from a Divemaster with hundreds of dives.
Someone returning to diving after five years needs something different from a diver who was underwater last week. Rather than treating every diver exactly the same, our instructors and guides pay attention to the individual.
Sometimes that means slowing down, sometimes it means explaining something in a different way, and sometimes it means giving an experienced diver more independence.
And sometimes it simply means asking, "How are you feeling?"
That simple question can make a big difference.
Safety Without Taking the Fun Out of Diving
Safety is fundamental to everything we do, but we also believe that being professional doesn't mean being stiff or overly serious. You can have a detailed briefing, perform a proper buddy check, monitor conditions and maintain high standards while still having a boat full of people laughing and enjoying themselves.
This balance comes up repeatedly in our reviews. Guests describe our team as professional, knowledgeable and safety-conscious, but also friendly, funny, relaxed and full of Pura Vida energy. That's exactly what we want.
Professionalism should make you feel more comfortable, not less. When divers understand the plan, know what to expect and trust the people around them, they can relax and concentrate on enjoying the experience.
We Take Dive Briefings Seriously
A dive briefing might not sound like the most exciting part of a dive trip, but we think it matters enormously. Before entering the water, our divers should understand where they are going, what conditions to expect, how the dive will be conducted, what marine life they might encounter and what to do if something changes.
Our guests have specifically mentioned our detailed briefings and buddy checks in their reviews, and that's a compliment we take seriously. A good briefing isn't about giving people more information than they need. It's about giving them the right information to make good decisions underwater.
When everyone knows the plan, the dive becomes more relaxed and enjoyable for everyone involved.
Small Groups Make a Big Difference
Another theme that comes up repeatedly in our reviews is group size. Small groups aren't just a luxury; they change the experience.
A smaller group allows an instructor or guide to pay more attention to individual divers. It makes it easier to adapt the pace of the dive, respond to different experience levels and spend more time observing marine life. It also means you don't feel like you're simply following a crowd from one point to another.
This becomes particularly important when a family includes divers with different certification levels, when someone is returning after a long break, or when an experienced diver wants to focus on photography or marine life.
We believe that better diving is more important than simply taking more divers. All our dives have a limited group size of 4 with an instructor as dive guide and a divemaster in training to assist. Whoever is running low on air will go up with the divemaster and the rest can enjoy maximized dive time with the instructor.
We Don't Just Want You to Complete a Course
Training is another area where we believe strongly in doing things differently. A certification should not simply mean that you completed a checklist. It should mean that you became a better diver.
Whether someone is taking their Open Water, Advanced, Rescue or a specialty course, our instructors want to understand what the student actually needs to improve.
Sometimes that means spending extra time on a skill. Sometimes it means explaining the theory in a different way. Sometimes it means adapting a dive so the student can practice something in real conditions.
The goal isn't simply to hand someone another certification card. The goal is for that person to leave as a more confident and capable diver than when they arrived.
We think that distinction is particularly important as divers move into professional training.
Professional Development Is Personal
At Rich Coast Diving, professional development is something we take seriously. Celine and Niels are both Instructor Trainers, and developing diving professionals is an important part of what we do.
Our goal isn't simply to help someone become an instructor. We want to help people become good instructors, good dive professionals and better leaders in the industry.
That means looking beyond the certification itself and talking about teaching, communication, customer service, dive operations, professionalism, career development and what it really means to work in the diving industry.
We want our Divemasters, instructors and future dive professionals to leave us with more than another certification on their CV.
We want them to leave with greater confidence, practical experience and a clearer understanding of where they can take their diving career.
SSI Is Part of That Philosophy
Our partnership with SSI has also played an important role in how we approach training and professional development.
We see SSI not simply as a certification agency, but as a partner in helping us continue to improve our training, develop our instructors and build a stronger professional diving operation.
Good training materials and digital tools are important, but what matters most to us is having an organization that supports dive professionals and continues to develop with the industry.
For us, that partnership has helped strengthen the way we approach both recreational and professional education. We believe dive professionals should never stop learning, and neither should a dive center.
We Care About the Experience Above the Water Too
A great diving experience doesn't start when you jump into the ocean. It starts when you contact us. It continues when you arrive at the shop, get fitted for equipment, meet your instructor and step onto the boat.
It includes the briefing, the boat ride, the conversations between dives, the fresh fruit and coffee, the jokes, the captain, the crew and all the little things that make the day enjoyable.
This is particularly important to us because many people don't travel all the way to Costa Rica simply to complete a dive. They're here on holiday, celebrating a birthday, traveling with their family, taking a break from work, learning something new or starting a new chapter in their diving life.
We want to be part of that memory.
We Know the Ocean Doesn't Always Cooperate
Costa Rica's Pacific coast is spectacular, but the ocean doesn't sign contracts. Visibility can change, currents can appear, water temperatures can vary and marine life certainly doesn't follow a schedule.
Sometimes you get crystal-clear water, calm conditions and a manta ray that decides to stay with the group. Other days, visibility may not be what you hoped for. That's diving.
Our job isn't to promise conditions we can't control. Our job is to understand the ocean, make good decisions, adapt when necessary and make the best possible experience out of the conditions we are given.
And when conditions aren't perfect, we still want our guests to feel that they were in good hands.
We Want You to Notice the Marine Life
One of the things we love most about our guides is their ability to find things that many divers would swim straight past.
A turtle is easy to notice. A shark is usually hard to miss. But what about the tiny seahorse hiding in the reef, the octopus tucked into a hole, the scorpionfish sitting perfectly camouflaged on the bottom or the moray eel hiding between rocks?

A great dive guide doesn't just show you the obvious. They teach you how to look.
Once you learn how to look underwater, your diving changes forever.
You start noticing movement, patterns, camouflage and small details that you might have completely missed before. The guide becomes more than someone leading the dive; they become your connection to the underwater environment.

After more than 30 years, we are still learning, still improving, still training our team, still exploring Costa Rica's Pacific coast and still getting excited when a first-time diver comes back to the boat with that unmistakable look on their face.
