Interview with Divemaster candidate Joshua (Germany).
When most people think about a Divemaster internship, they imagine diving every day, seeing incredible marine life, and collecting another certification.
Of course, all of those things are part of the experience. But if your goal is to build a career in diving, there's one question that matters even more:
Will I actually be ready to work as a professional when I finish?

That was one of the biggest reasons I chose a longer internship rather than completing my Divemaster certification as quickly as possible. Looking back, it was absolutely the right decision.
Becoming More Than a Certified Diver
A certification card doesn't automatically make you a confident dive professional.
Working in a dive center means much more than leading dives.

You need to communicate clearly with guests from around the world, organize equipment, solve problems under pressure, work as part of a team, understand customer service, and make people feel safe and welcome.
Those are skills that only develop through experience. During my internship, I had the opportunity to practice those skills every single day.

Learning How a Dive Center Really Operates
One of the biggest advantages of a professional internship is seeing everything that happens behind the scenes.
Guests usually only experience the fun part, boarding the boat and going diving.
As a Divemaster trainee, I learned everything that happens before and after the dives.
Preparing equipment.
Loading boats.
Organising rental gear.
Helping customers.
Supporting instructors.
Keeping everything running smoothly.
Those responsibilities helped me understand what employers actually expect from a professional Divemaster.

Professional Workshops That Make a Difference
One thing that impressed me most was the number of professional development workshops included in the internship.
These weren't just about improving my diving. They were about preparing me for a career.
During the internship we covered topics such as:
Equipment maintenance and basic servicing
Customer service
Sales techniques in a dive center
Delivering professional dive briefings
CV writing and job applications
Career planning within the diving industry
These are practical skills that many new professionals only learn after they get their first job.
Having the chance to develop them during my internship gave me much more confidence.

Building a Professional CV
Before arriving in Costa Rica, I hadn't really thought about how I would present myself to future employers.
The internship included a CV workshop where we learned how to create a professional diving résumé and highlight the experience employers are looking for.
One detail I really appreciated was receiving professional headshots for our CVs.

It might seem like a small thing, but it immediately made my applications look more professional.
It showed me that the internship wasn't just about completing a course, it was about helping us start successful careers.

Learning Through Mentorship
One of the reasons I enjoyed my internship so much was the amount of individual attention.
Rather than feeling like another student moving through a system, I felt like I was being mentored.
Whenever I had questions, needed feedback, or wanted to improve a particular skill, there was always someone willing to help.

That support made a huge difference to my confidence.
Instead of worrying about making mistakes, I learned to see them as opportunities to improve.
Five Specialty Courses That Expanded My Skills
Another major advantage of the internship was completing five SSI Specialty Courses that were included with the 3 month internship. Deep, navigation, shark ecology, Night & limited visibility and science of diving.
Each specialty introduced new environments, techniques, and challenges that made me a more versatile diver.

Beyond improving my own diving, these specialties will also be valuable as I continue my Instructor training and eventually teach future students.

Confidence Comes From Experience
Looking back, I think confidence is one of the biggest things I gained during my internship.
Not because someone told me I was ready. But because I had spent months actively participating in the daily life of a professional dive center.
Every briefing I watched.
Every customer I helped.
Every dive I assisted.
Every workshop I attended.
Every challenge I overcame.
Those experiences gradually built the confidence that every dive professional needs.

Why I'm Continuing My Training Here
Perhaps the biggest compliment I can give is this:
When my Divemaster internship finished, I didn't want to leave.
Instead, I enrolled in the SSI Instructor Training Course with the same team.

Even after becoming an instructor, I'll be staying longer to assist on courses and continue gaining real teaching experience before starting my professional career. For me, that says everything about the quality of the training and the people behind it.

Looking Beyond the Certification
If you're considering becoming a Divemaster, my advice is simple.
Don't only ask yourself: "Where can I get certified?"
Instead ask:
"Where can I become the best dive professional I can be?" For me, those are two very different questions. A certification lasts forever.
But the knowledge, confidence, friendships, and practical experience you gain during your internship will shape your entire career.

My Advice to Future Divemasters
Choose a program that invests in you as a person, not just as a student. Look for opportunities to develop communication skills, leadership, customer service, equipment knowledge, and real-world experience. Those are the things that will help you stand out when you apply for your first job and continue to benefit you throughout your diving career.
