With its vibrant landscapes and incredible biodiversity, Costa Rica is a paradise for kayaking enthusiasts. Paddle the calm waters of Lake Arenal, wind through the mysterious mangrove forests of the Osa Peninsula, navigate the flowing Peñas Blancas River, or explore the wildlife-rich Pacific coast. Wherever you dip your paddle, Costa Rica delivers unforgettable adventures on the water.
In this blog, we’re taking you to one of our favorite kayaking spots: the vibrant Pacific town of Playas del Coco, Guanacaste.

While Guanacaste’s Pacific coast may not have coral reefs, it more than makes up for it with spectacular kayaking and snorkeling adventures. As you paddle along the dramatic volcanic shoreline, you’ll be surrounded by tropical fish, graceful sea turtles, gliding rays, and an incredible variety of birdlife. And if you visit during the right season, you may even be lucky enough to spot majestic humpback whales breaching that visit our local waters.

Why Kayak in Playas del Coco?
Playas del Coco is mostly known for its close acces to Costa Rica´s best snorkeling & dive sites. But the sheltered waters of Coco Bay make it also ideal for both beginners and experienced kayakers. Launching straight from the beach, you’ll glide across calm waters with stunning views of the rugged shoreline and lush green hills. The pace is relaxed, allowing plenty of time to take in the scenery and enjoy the fresh ocean breeze.
Home to the Pelonas Islands and some great local beaches the Gulf of Papagayo is a very scenic and vibrant Kayak location. This area is home to a large population of marine sea turtles and in the season humpback whales visit the bay. Besides the shallow coastline around the Pelonas islands offer great snorkeling with abundant marine-life, like rays, octopus, little reef sharks and more.
Guided Exploration
Exploring the coastline is always best with an experienced guide. The price difference between renting a kayak on your own and joining a guided tour is minimal, but the benefits are huge—your guide ensures your safety, shares local knowledge, and takes you to the very best spots.
Our morning kayak tour costs $95 USD per person and incudes:
3-hour guided kayak & snorkeling
Multilingual experienced kayak / snorkel guide
Refreshments like water, iced tea, cake and fruits
Snorkel gear (mask & snorkel) and life jackets
Mornings are the perfect time for kayaking in Costa Rica, as the ocean is typically at its calmest. The best time of year for kayaking is from April to November, when the seas are generally calmer and the water is clearer and warmer.
From November through April, kayaking trips are weather-dependent, as winds tend to be stronger during this period.
For the best experience, all of our kayak tours depart early in the morning, offering the smoothest paddling conditions and the best opportunities for snorkeling.
Our guided kayak and snorkeling adventure with Rich Coast Diving begins at 8:00 AM on the main beach of Playas del Coco. After a short safety briefing and getting geared up, you’ll set off along the coastline toward Playa Penca, a rare stretch of white sand tucked among Guanacaste’s volcanic black-sand beaches. Here, you can unwind on the shore or slip beneath the surface to snorkel around rocky reefs alive with colorful marine life.

Recharged and ready, you’ll continue your paddle along the scenic shoreline and, when conditions allow, venture toward the Pelonas Islands before returning to Playas del Coco. The tour wraps up by late morning 11.00 AM , leaving you plenty of time to enjoy the rest of your day in paradise. Or join our Zipline or ATV tour.
Snorkeling from Your Kayak
The highlight of the tour is pulling up your kayak at the beautiful beach of Playa Penca and slipping into the water with mask and Snorkel. The volcanic rock formations provide shelter for an incredible array of marine life: colorful tropical fish, graceful rays, playful pufferfish, and, with a bit of luck, sea turtles and little reef sharks. During the right season, you might even spot dolphins or humpback whales on your paddle route.

A Relaxing Adventure for Everyone
Whether you’re looking for a family-friendly outing, a fun activity with friends, or a way to connect with nature, kayaking with snorkeling in Playas del Coco is an unforgettable experience. It’s active yet relaxing, adventurous yet accessible—perfect for anyone who wants to see Costa Rica’s Pacific coast from a different perspective.
