Advanced Open Water Diver Course

The course helps build confidence and expand your scuba skills through different Adventure Dives.

There are two specialties you will have to complete mandatory, in order to obtain the Advanced Open Water Certification. These are the Deep adventure and the Underwater Navigation adventure and you choose the other three and we include one fun dive for free.

The Deep adventure dive will bring you to about 30 meters deep (compared to the maximum 18 meters during the Open Water course). And the Underwater Navigation Adventure dive will teach you how to use a compass and find your way below the surface.

As a diving career center we are proud to have the highest rating in the industry and our experienced staff looks forward to take you diving. All our training is of the hightest standarts. Our recreational courses have a ratio of maximum 2 students per instructor, therefore making your course private or semi-private !

Learn about underwater navigation, deep diving and three types of specialty diving that interest you. After some skill practice with your instructor, you'll make five open water dives and here at Rich Coast Diving we include one extra fun dive. The 6 dives can be completed in two or three mornings.

1. Independent study - online digital learning

Advanced Open Water Diver digital learning includes interactive lessons on several popular specialty dives. With Rich Coast Diving you can choose from the following adventure dives:

• Boat diving

• Deep diving

• Enriched Air Nitrox (EAN)

• Navigation

• Night & Limited Visibility

• Perfect Buoyancy

• Photo & video

• Search & Recovery

• Waves, tides and currents

• Wreck diving

You'll study deep and navigation diving plus three specialties of your choosing from the list above.

• Digital learning time commitment: 2-4 hours

2. With your Instructor

The course includes five dives: a deep dive below 18m/60f, a navigation dive, and three specialty dives. Gain experience, build confidence and discover your diving abilities.

• Prerequisites: Open Water Diver / Junior Open Water Diver (or qualifying certification)

• Total time commitment: 2-3 days

• Minimum age: 12 years or older

• Depth: The maximum depth depends on your age, but maximum depth is up to 30 metres/100 feet

Please bring your scuba diving license:

• Towels

• Camera or GoPro (plenty of dry space is available onboard)

• Credit card or cash for payment, cash for tips or extra services,

• Reef safe sunscreen (for sale in our shop) and or a sunhat.

• Please ensure that you leave sufficient time between diving and your return flight or driving to altitude (Min. 24 hours) !

• Proof of certification is required. You must show your diving licence to staff at the store when completing paperwork. Lack of proof may require additional cost and training.

• Contact us for pick up from your accommodation (at additional charge).

When to go diving in Costa Rica ?

Our location offers great diving and training conditions all year round. The water temperature generally ranges from 26 - 28 degrees Celsius year round (with some colder days in February), so a 3 - 5mm wetsuit is sufficient to keep you comfortably warm. The visibility of the waters on our Pacific Coast can change from day to day. It can be very clear on some days and only a few meters or feet on other days. But don't let it spoil your dive as the marine life is always there to entertain you ! Conveniently located our dive sites are only 10-15 minutes away and accessible year-round for diving and snorkeling.

What about diving in the dry season or rainy season ?

In Costa Rica, the seasons are divided between the rainy season (which runs from May to November) and the dry season (which runs from November to April). Generally we have the best visibility and warm water from April to November. And from November to March the underwater conditions can be a bit more unpredictable. With colder water (24 - 26 Celsius) and more nutrient rich water with less visibility. That said the marine life is always there and the nutrient rich waters of the pacific bring a lot of species of rays to our dive sites in the dry season (November to April). And even the chance to see the Giant Oceanic Mantas at Catalinas Islands !
